Comic Relief: Reviewing the Danica Patrick Graphic Novel

Danica Patrick is famous. We know this to be true. Indeed, Danica Patrick is you-have-permission-to-wear-sunglasses-and-smoke-cigarettes-inside famous. What we don?t know is: Why? In Fame: Danica Patrick, an ambitious, steaming piece of graphic literature geared toward the ?tween set, authors C.W. Cooke and P.R. McCormack set out to answer that very question. According to Cooke and [...]

American Chopper Cadillac Bike "Paul Junior" Edition

Paul Teutel and Paul Teutel Jr. are household names in the world of bikers both local and foreign. As the men behind the popular American Chopper TV series, the two Pauls have become famous for their custom-tuned bikes, racking up a list of high-profile clients that include musicians, actors, and professional athletes.

And while Paul the Younger is no longer part of the Orange County Choppers team, father and son will forever be linked together, which leads us to this pretty unique build-off involving the two protagonists - or antagonists, depending on which side of the fence you’re on.

In collaboration with Cadillac, Paul the Older and Paul the Younger each were given free reign to design and build their own Cadillac CTS-V-inspired custom bike.

In the case of Paul Junior, his interpretation translated to a lowered piece of monstrosity with a metallic black finish and the prevalent use of chrome accents to go with the unique, albeit imposing modern-day look. According to Junior, he wanted to design the rear end of the book to bear striking similarities to the rear of the car, even using the taillights from the CTS-V by incorporating them into his work’s fender.

The two bikes will eventually be auctioned off to benefit the Cure Duchenne charity. Seeing as the egos in the Teutel family never seem to run dry, a Discovery Channel ran a poll to see which bike the public liked more. To no one’s surprise, Junior blew Pops out of the water, holding a staggering 96% - 4% edge in fan approval.

Either way, both bikes can be had for the highest bidder. Just head over to the link and post your price. Best be warned, though, the bids for Junior’s bike are going straight through the roof.

Not long ago, I posted a list of the ten least-expensive convertibles of 2011. When I update the list for 2012, this is the car that should take position #2, right between the Smart Fortwo Cabrio and the Mazda Miata: It's the 2012 Fiat 500c.

Obama pledges $500 million to accelerate emerging technologies

Darpa

On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP), a national initiative designed to intertwine industry, universities and the federal government to advance emerging technologies. The President's plan calls for more than $500 million to jumpstart AMP, with significant investments to be made in these key areas:
  • Building domestic manufacturing capabilities in critical national security industries
  • Reducing the time needed to make advanced materials used in manufacturing products
  • Establishing U.S. leadership in next-generation robotics
  • Increasing the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes
  • Developing new technologies that will dramatically reduce the time required to design, build, and test manufactured goods
AMP is being formed in response to a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) titled "Ensuring Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing." The PCAST report claims that the U.S is losing its lead in manufacturing, not just in low-tech industries, but in the fabrication of high-tech items, which we'd assume includes automobiles.

AMP will be led by Andrew Liveris, chief executive officer of Dow Chemical, and Susan Hockfield, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Some of the universities and corporations involved in AMP include: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan, Dow Chemical, Ford, and Intel. Check out the White House's press release after the jump for more info.

2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata

I find it hard to believe, but the Miata has been around for over two decades -- it was coming on the market right around the time I got my driver's license. The Miata has long been a favorite of mine, and I enjoyed my test drive every bit as much as I expected -- but there's one blatant flaw in this car that really bothers me. Get the skinny in my 2011 Mazda MX-5 Miata review. -- Aaron Gold

Mulally voted CEO of the Year by fellow suits

Alan Mulally at CES

Ford CEO Alan Mulally must have an impressive trophy room. The executive was just voted to be the 2011 CEO of the Year by a group of fellow head honchos, adding yet another honor to his already lengthy list of awards. Chief Executive Magazine readers nominated those leaders they felt deserved a tip of the hat, and the top 10 names with the most votes were then submitted to a selection committee for a final decision. This year's committee was comprised of executives leading companies ranging from Office Depot to MetLife and Ernst & Young.

Despite Ford taking a beating in this year's JD Power Initial Quality rankings due to trouble with its MyFord Touch and Sync systems, the selection committee still recognized Mulally for helping usher the automaker through some of the darkest days of domestic auto production. Last year, Mulally pulled down honors for Businessperson of the Year and he made the Motor Trend power list for 2011. We hear he's shooting for an Oscar in 2012. Hit the jump for the CEO of the Year press release.

Report: Jeep pickup put on the backburner

Jeep Gladiator
Jeep Gladiator Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

If you've been saving your pennies in anticipation of the upcoming pickup truck from Jeep, get ready to wait a little longer. According to PickupTrucks.com, Jeep CEO Mike Manley has said that resources at Chrysler are all tied up in other projects at the moment. With the full brunt of the company's operations directed towards transmission and small car development, there's simply not enough cash on hand to go creating a whole new member of the Jeep family. That means the Jeep pickup has been put on ice, at least for the time being.

Interestingly enough, Manley also said that when the versatile Jeep does touch down on American soil, it will also likely launch in international markets as well. The head honcho said he could easily see a metric-ton version of the pickup selling well outside the States. PickupTrucks.com reports that markets in Southeast Asia and Europe are particularly fond of trucks with a cargo capacity of around 2,205 pounds.

For now though, we'll just have to content ourselves with the JK-8 pickup conversion.
