On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP), a national initiative designed to intertwine industry, universities and the federal government to advance emerging technologies. The President's plan calls for more than $500 million to jumpstart AMP, with significant investments to be made in these key areas:
  • Building domestic manufacturing capabilities in critical national security industries
  • Reducing the time needed to make advanced materials used in manufacturing products
  • Establishing U.S. leadership in next-generation robotics
  • Increasing the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes
  • Developing new technologies that will dramatically reduce the time required to design, build, and test manufactured goods
AMP is being formed in response to a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) titled "Ensuring Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing." The PCAST report claims that the U.S is losing its lead in manufacturing, not just in low-tech industries, but in the fabrication of high-tech items, which we'd assume includes automobiles.

AMP will be led by Andrew Liveris, chief executive officer of Dow Chemical, and Susan Hockfield, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Some of the universities and corporations involved in AMP include: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan, Dow Chemical, Ford, and Intel. Check out the White House's press release after the jump for more info.
